Church History

The opening of Calvary Temple in 1964 was the realization of the dream and vision to establish a church mainly for the growing Fijian speaking congregation with help of Calvary Temple in Denver, Colorado, USA. The work in building a Church began in July 10, 1964 the contract of construction of the church was signed. The church was planned and supervised by ‘Larson and Associates’. The new Calvary Temple was promised to be built in eighteen weeks from the day of signing of contract. The company fulfilled what they promised, the church was completed.

Organizing the ‘about to be church’ was another thoughtful task to be accomplished where membership, Associate Pastors, Deacons, Secretaries, Treasurers, Presidents and Heads of Departments were considered. All the members and adherents of First Church were given a choice, as to whether they would remain members there, or transfer their membership to Calvary Temple when it opened. About two thirds chose Calvary Temple with the Fijian language Service.

The date was November 14, the same year where the ceremony of dedication of Calvary Temple was conducted with new facilities. In spite of the rain, the church was full with an attendance of over 1,400. The then Minister for Fijian Affairs, the late Tui Cakau and former President of Fiji, Ratu Penaia Ganilau represented the Government of Fiji where he spoke to congratulate the AOG of Fiji. Calvary Temple was officially opened as the first AOG Church with a Fijian language service in Fiji.
